NATIONAL SAFE DAY

June 4th is National SAFE Day, but what is it for? National SAFE Day stands to remind us that safety measures must be taken to prevent accidental shootings in a household. A large portion of the population has a firearm in their home and many of these people have children residing in their homes. Every year children die due to accidental shootings that could have been avoided if the appropriate safety precautions were taken to ensure the security of the firearm. There are many ways to secure a firearm in a home while still allowing for fast access, yet accidental deaths still occur due to children finding improperly stored firearms. National SAFETY days reminds us to practice responsible gun ownership and to educate children on firearms. At Six Maritime, we can provide you with a gun safety course in Gainesville, FL.

How did National SAFE Day Begin?

National SAFE Day was started by the Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation. In 2016, the request for National SAFE Day was submitted and it was approved by the Registrar at National Day Calendar. Brooklynn Mae Mohler was a 13-year-old girl who was the victim of a preventable shooting on June 4, 2013. She was shot and killed at her best friend’s house when her friend picked up and played with a gun that was left loaded and with no safety in a kitchen cabinet. The foundation is committed to the education and practice of responsible gun ownership so that tragedies such as Brooklynn’s can be avoided.

What Does SAFE Stand For?

The word SAFE in National SAFE Day is an acronym that stands for:

  • Secure all firearms in the home
  • Ask the question about unsecured firearms in the homes your child visits
  • Frequently talk to your children about the dangers of firearms
  • Educate and Empower others to be SAFE

How to Live Safely with a Firearm in the House

There are many precautions and safety measures that gun owners can take in order to protect their children and themselves from accidental shootings due to improperly stored and secured firearms in their homes.

  • Firearms should be unloaded when not in use.
  • When removing or returning a firearm to storage it should always be pointed in a safe direction away from any person.
  • Maintain your firearm clean at all times.
  • Store your firearms in a locked cabinet, gun vault, safe, or storage case in a location inaccessible to children.
  • Always unload, clean, and properly store your firearm immediately after returning home from use.
  • Store ammunition in a separate, locked location from the firearm.
  • Use a gun locking device that renders a firearm inoperable when stored or not in use.
  • Talk to your children and everyone in the home about firearms and explain the dangers of improper use.
  • Attend a gun training course to fully understand how your firearm operates.
  • Always practice safe gun handling.
