FIREARM TRAINING USED AS THERAPY

Therapeutic Benefits of Gainesville Firearm Training

Traditionally, firearm training facilities are predominantly filled with men. However, over the past several years, more women have been purchasing guns and seeking training. Awr Hawkins talks about this in his article titled “Firearms Training is the New ‘Therapy Session’ for Female Crime Victims.” He argues that as women continue to become victims of crime or feel endangered, the number of women who want to take a gun safety course increases.

Firearms Training Empowers Women

In the article, Hawkins discusses the reason women attend these classes with a quote from Nneka Lawrence, a firearms training course instructor, stating, “Some of them come in crying because they have been attacked before, raped, or robbed. Others want to simply protect themselves.” When women own a gun and know how to properly handle it, women can feel safe knowing they can defend themselves. Hawkins even makes the point that these same women may have been previously against the idea of owning a gun but have come understand the benefits they can provide. Real life can be frightening and dangerous, and possessing a gun can give women confidence knowing they have help avoiding these life threatening scenarios.

Gun Safety Classes Create Comfortable Atmosphere

Hawkins argues that the unique atmosphere created during gun safety courses acts as a form of therapy. Lawrence states, “some of the women who come in still have tears in their eyes from an attack or assault they suffered while unarmed.” Women are emotionally vulnerable and sensitive because of recent events and though they may be looking for a way to physically defend themselves, they also find emotional support from training. She goes on to say, “I think my aura in class allows them to… open up with me to share what has happened to them.” A lot of these women have been through similar experiences and use these gun training courses as a way to connect with and learn from other women.

Firearm Safety Courses in Gainesville, FL

According to Hawkins, women can only benefit from taking a gun training class. It is important for all women and men alike to realize that if you do purchase a gun, proper training is critical. Without learning how to safely handle a firearm, you will only endanger yourself and those around you. Six Maritime offers a variety of firearm training courses for both women and men with all skill levels. Six Maritime differs from other facilities because we also teach our students how to be aware of their surroundings and how to de-escalate these situations when possible.
