13 Ways to Properly Handle a Firearm

Whether you are an advanced marksman or a beginner, Six Maritime promotes several measures that should be taken every time you hold a gun in order to ensure safety.

1. Always act like your gun is loaded.
2. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to shoot.
3. Keep your gun unloaded while not in use.
4. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times.
5. Be positive of your target and what lays beyond it before shooting.
6. Learn how your specific gun functions and the proper way to hold it.
7. Verify your barrel does not have any obstructions.
8. Be cautious of surrounding area so you do not accidentally trip and point your muzzle at anything other than your target.
9. Always use the correct ammunition.
10. Do not rely on your gun’s “safety.”
11. If your gun fails to fire when you pull the trigger, wait several seconds in the same position and then cautiously unload the gun.
